How is the retail market doing?

In 2018, the famous US retail brand 7-Eleven entered Vietnam. This is a joint project of 7-Eleven’s subsidiary Japan based in the US and the new joint venture is Seven System Vietnam Joint Stock Company. At this time, many domestic selling brands started to be more aware of the competition from this market. So what are the brands currently dominating the retail market? What is the number of chains they own? Are there any franchised brands?
1. VINMART +
Vincommerce currently has 1457 affiliated business units, including the system of VinMart Supermarkets, convenience stores / VinMart + mini supermarkets, VinPro Electronics Center, VinPro + Technology Stores, and Adayroi e-commerce hypermarket. , chain of retail stores according to international standards (Beautyzone, Sportsworld, Shoecenter, Fashion Megastore, Index Living Mall). Vincommerce store chain is present in 59/63 provinces and cities nationwide, 4 provinces without Vin presence are Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Dak Nong and Dien Bien, these are 4 provinces with the least population and density. The most sparsely populated population in Vietnam. Particularly, the convenience store chain / mini supermarket VinMart + has 904 stores.
2. CIRCLE K
Circle K convenience store system currently has 366 stores, distributed in 6 provinces and cities: Ho Chi Minh (206), Hanoi (140), Ba Ria – Vung Tau (13), Binh Duong (1), Can Tho (2) and Quang Ninh (4). Seven System Vietnam is the Master Franchise unit of Circle K in Vietnam.
3. CO.OP FOOD
Co.op Food belongs to Saigon Co.op. The total number of stores and supermarkets at Saigon Co.op is more than 400, of which the system of Co.op Food stores has more than 300 stores, distributed in 11 provinces and cities nationwide. Most are in Ho Chi Minh City with more than 200 stores. Co.op Food started franchising on September 1, 2016.
4. VISSAN
Vietnam Animal Industries Vietnam Joint Stock Company (Vissan) is a member of Saigon Trading Corporation – SATRA. Vissan currently has a total of 215 business locations, present in 6 provinces: Ho Chi Minh (202), Binh Duong (3), Hanoi (4), Dong Nai (4), Binh Thuan (1), North Ninh (1).
5. FAMILY MART
Vietnam Family Convenience Store Company Limited was established on May 17, 2013, the general manager is Mr. Takehiko Kigure. Mr. Takehiko Kigure is a member of Holdings Service Joint Stock Company (the parent company of Familymart) and is the Chairman of BELLSYSTEM24-HOASAO Joint Stock Company. Familymart currently has 147 stores in 3 provinces: Ho Chi Minh (126), Binh Duong (13), Ba Ria – Vung Tau (8).
6. MINISTOP
MiniStop of Aeon Group (Japan) currently has 128 stores operating in Ho Chi Minh City (127) and Binh Duong (1). The total number of registered MiniStop stores is 151 in Ho Chi Minh and 2 in Binh Duong. MiniStop Vietnam Co., Ltd currently has the managing unit is Vinh Khanh Consulting Joint Stock Company.
7. Binary MART
In 2010, Phu Thai Group Joint Stock Company acquired all the capital contribution in the joint venture of Vietnam FamilyMart Co., Ltd. and launched a new retail brand – B’s mart. As of October 2019, B’Mart has a total of 177 business locations in Ho Chi Minh City, including 122 stores in operation.
8. GS25
GS Retail Vietnam Joint Venture Company Limited was established in 2017 as a cooperation between Son Kim Real Estate Joint Stock Company and GS Retail Vietnam Co., Ltd. (established in 2008). In this joint venture, Son Kim holds 70% of the year – GS25 holds 30% of the shares. Currently the GS25 chain has 44 stores in Ho Chi Minh City. The chain also started franchising in Vietnam.
9. LETEE MART
Leetee Mart is a trademark of Investment Corporation and Smart Retail Management (Member of BT Group). The system currently has 39 stores, including 19 BT Mart stores distributed in 23 provinces and cities nationwide. This chain is scattered throughout the provinces, Hanoi currently has the largest number of 6 stores, Ho Chi Minh City has no stores. Leetee Mart has also franchised to partners in need.
10. 7-ELEVEN
Eleven Vietnam is a joint project of 7-Eleven Japan subsidiary with US-based office and a new joint venture, Seven System Vietnam Joint Stock Company. The system currently has 33 stores operating in Ho Chi Minh City out of a total of 49 licensed locations.
These are the big companies with the largest number of retail chains today. Out of the 10 largest brands in this retail market, only 3 franchises are franchised in Vietnam market. The retail market is growing rapidly and is interested by many big companies. However, there are still some brands that still have to leave, such as Shop & Go sold to VinCommerce for $ 1 in April 2019. Let’s wait for the next developments in this retail market.
